Recently I shared an HR Compliance Roadmap for start-ups. Whether it's a start-up or a small team I'm working with, I usually get the same reaction from clients when discussing compliance. "Is there something we're not doing that we should be doing?" Yes... and no.
While it's ok to stick with the 80-20 rule where you have something implemented that may not be perfect yet, the reality is that you want to ensure your employees have a safe workplace and you've done your due diligence to ensure they've been adequately trained.
The HR Compliance Roadmap I shared highlights what companies must do as they hit various headcount milestones. I will share with you some quick (and free) resources to implement mandatory H&S training and ensure you're compliant as an employer.
In an ideal world, these training courses could be specific to your organization, but you have to start somewhere when you're just beginning to hire your first employees. You're taking a step in the right direction in protecting and creating awareness for your employees. It doesn't have to be perfect yet!
Below is a quick guide on where you can obtain mandatory training for your employees. The best part.... they're FREE and provide trainees with the training certificates you (as an employer) need to keep on file. Yes, as an employer, you must maintain all training records. Don't worry, I've got you covered - use this Training Tracking Template I created.
Free training resources:
Health and Safety Awareness Training
The Occupational Health & Safety Act applies to all employees. Thus, workers, supervisors, and employers must take this training.
Supervisor Health & Safety Awareness
Anyone functioning at a supervisor/ managerial level must complete this training course in addition to the Health & Safety Awareness training listed above.
Everyone in the company must take this training, including volunteers.
Harassment & Violence in the Workplace Training
This training applies to all employees working for the company.
To scale this…
Consider adding these to your onboarding to make it a bit simpler for you. Have new hires work through this training and provide you with their completed training certificates.
There is more…
These aren't all the requirements employers must have in place, but it's an excellent place to start. Depending on the size of the company or which province your company is operating in, there are many other requirements.
